Top Cock Season 1 Finale |
HCL 28: Joe Son Do is the twenty-eighth mixed martial arts event held by the Human Cockfighting League. The event took place on February 23, 2014 from the Benedict Canyon Civic Center in Los Angeles, California.
Event
This event featured seven sanctioned mixed martial arts bouts. All fights consisted of three five-minute rounds, except for the main event championship fight, which consisted of five five-minute rounds.
The main event saw an action-packed single round of light heavyweight fighting, as Derby Mutton nearly defended his championship for the first time, only to find a shockingly resilient Corgi van de Groof recover, and defeat the Brit via TKO with less than a minute to go. Mutton's power and ability to crowd van de Groof caused problems, with a right hand rocking the Dutchman. However, Corgi weathered the storm, and with a barrage of strikes not 30 seconds later, sent the gritty Mutton to the ground, where he was unable to mount a similar recovery.
Top Cock coach Wes Blackwell, while tentatively scheduled to fight fellow coach Stuart Peppers in March, had a more immediate challenge at hand, in the surging backyarder Jackson Outcast. However, this proved to be barely a challenge, as Outcast was too concerned with his outlasting his own entrance music during the fight. For the record, he did not make it past the first verse, as a backfist from Blackwell led to the referee stoppage and TKO victory in under a minute.
HCL 28 was an opportunity for middle-of-the-pack and struggling roster members to make claims for improvement. Roosevelt Hazelwood notched his first win over debuting David Orr in his first fight in the HCL welterweight division. Still undefeated Ben McGuirk scored a vicious knockout over Nick Belmont, and Ray Peterson surged back up the rankings by getting back to his winning ways, taking out Asian guy Rupert Takamura.
